Geneva
The first traces of human civilization in Geneva,
discovered on the shores of Lake Léman, date from around 3000 BC. The
hill of the Old City, however, was not inhabited until 1000 BC. Later,
when Rome conquered Geneva, it was defended by a small Celtic tribe. In
58 BC, Julius Caesar drove off an attack by the Helvetii. At the height
of the Roman Empire, around 400 AD, it became a bishopric. The region
was settled in 443 by a Germanic tribe, the Burgundians, but they were
defeated later by the Francs, who occupied it in 534. Geneva was
incorporated into the Merovingian dynasty, then into the Carlovingian
Empire.
Surrounded
by majestic mountains, Geneva is a compact and cultivated metropolis
hugging the shores of the bluest
lake in Switzerland.
This is probably the most cosmopolitan and sophisticated city in
Switzerland. Situated on the southern tip of lake Geneva, this city is a
centre for international culture and business. Geneva is the European
headquarters of the United Nations and the place where the International
Red Cross first started. This is friendly and clean city with many
attractions to offer the tourist. This is a city with a long history and
this is reflected in the array of museums and galleries which chronicle
the cities historical achievements
With more
than 1,000 restaurants, Geneva and the surrounding area are hardly
lacking in places to dine. While Swiss, French and Italian restaurants
are seemingly 10 a penny, the city's ethnic groups have contributed
towards the growing diversity in cuisine originating from other
cultures. Pub-wise Geneva has several English/Irish-themed watering
holes. Some televise sporting events (the
Mr Pickwick for example) and tend to be incredibly packed if there
is a major football game scheduled.
If you love to shop, there is no better place than
Geneva. Our downtown boasts a marketplace of over 100 specialty shops
nestled in historic storefronts and charming Victorian style homes.
Shopping should be high
on the agenda of any visit to
Switzerland, and there are some things that you just can’t go past. Such
as the melt-in-your-mouth delight of Swiss chocolate. And it’s
also something more than a coincidence that high quality watches and
pocket knives are often preceded with the word ‘Swiss’. The quality of
craftsmanship in genuine Swiss watches and knives is a true reflection
of the Swiss penchant for perfectionism.
